Winter in Michigan December 21 - March 21

Two Little Snowflakes
Way up high in the winter sky,
2 little snowflakes caught my eye.
Down to the ground they fell without a sound.
And before very long,

It was snowing all around.

We had 15 hours in the entire month of January above 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Awwww - shuddup.
I'd like to lend my voice to the chorus of discontent from way down under - it's hottttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!
And dry and dusty
(you can see what my neck of the woods looks like at the moment here:
http://www.poofanditsgone.blogspot.com/
I want to dive into that snow and swim around in it.
Although, I don't think I'd like to be a homeless person in Michigan.
32F - that's like 0 deg. celsius!!

Coming from a mightily cold country namely England, I am pleased to announce we have had STUPIDLY cold weather here - down to -8 deg Celcius inland!

Not a lot of snow though - cos it's so wet most the time, the snow doesn't get a chance to lay much - at least down here on the South coast, although lots of places are snowing round our area.

Don, we're right with you on the frigid January, only not quite as intense as yours. Every day, David asks when we're moving south. Sometimes I even think he's serious. :)

Hope the chickies are faring well. Is Broody proud? My hens have been going gangbusters with the laying. I've averaged a dozen eggs a day out of 15 hens. Yesterday was the least amount I've gotten and that was seven. The hens and I are so, so ready for spring. Today's high will be 40, so there is hope.

The pictures are beautiful! We have snow here in SE Missouri. Luckily we aren't one of those counties that lost their power. Now our yard and drive is pure ice.

Stay warm,
Debbie

Well I wonder six more weeks of this? Do you have groundhog's day? I think it might be eight to ten more weeks. We have been getting -18 to -30 Celcius so the rest of you look like you are having a heat wave compared to me! :(

It's pretty bad when you have to count the HOURS!

Oooh what fun! I say if you have to do winter you might as well do it well! Do you have a farm pond and ice skates? Your state is shaped like a mitten after all! Ours is shaped like...Washington.
Have a real hot chocolate day!

Don said...

granny: It's actually about 40 F today. It almost feels like spring! The snow is packing down and if you were here we could have a really good snowball fight.

I love the different seasons and look forward to hot hot hot and everything in-between.

Don said...

cupcakes: You can't get there from here! (that's an old yankee new england "joke.")

Ddon't lose your cool down there!

Don said...

freefalling: come on in, the temperature is a balmy 40 F with 10" of snow on the ground, probably compacted down a bit.

I will come and take a look at your blog. It's always worth the trip.

Don said...

stiggy: all of our winter traditions come from Jolly Old England, so we expect you to be cold and snowy.

Is that actually true?

Don said...

susan: Broody is the proud protective mama. Today Ruth and I went out to snap some photos of the chicks, but Broody kept her body between the chicks and Ruth the whole time. She must be used to me, cuz she doesn't do that to me.

Maybe Ruth looks like a predator!

We are all getting ready for spring too, but we know we live in Michigan. If the groundhog sees his shadow, we'll still have 8 weeks of wintery weather, regardless.

We had a heavy frost on June 1 last year!

Don said...

grandma: get out the ice skates and start your tiple axels and double lutz's!

Glad you kept your power and your safety

Don said...

nobody-but-us-chickens: You have been hit harder than us, but you're from the far north, we're just the near north.

I've heard that if summer falls on a saturday in Ontario, you all up there play some ball and have a picnic.

Don said...

laura: we counted, and they were glorious, but it was still cold!

I just put on my blaze orange stocking cap! It's a really good look with my plaid jammy bottoms and a burgundy sweat shirt. The chickens think I am really stylin!

Don said...

lanny: Yes we do have a pond. it's buried under several feet of snow and is out in the woods. the former residents used to play ice hockey on it, every summer i find more pucks, hockey sticks and last year I found a goalie stick! THey were all broken, but it's fun to be an archaeologist.

Bring on the cocoa! No one makes it like you!

That snow acts like insulation, right? Egads I don't envy that sort of insulation at all! Stay warm! Happy Groundhog Day!

Claire MW said...

Lovely photographs - reminds me of how our place looked until Friday, when things warmed up, and Saturday/Sunday, when it stayed warm(ish) and now it's a re-frozen mess of mud and ice. Ugh.

sandy said...

15 hours for the whole month, my God!!!

wow, but the photos are beautiful.

Don said...

warren: insulation, yes, several feet of it, and I think it kept all groundhogs under ground, thus no shadow! That means only untold more weeks of winter.

Don said...

claire: The joys of winter are fully upon you! Just think how much you will enjoy spring.

Don said...

sandy: and to top it off, we really burned through the firewood, so now I have to get out the chainsaw and go out into the knee-deep snow to capture some more.

Mandie said...

geesh, that's cold!!! I complain when it is lower then 40, I guess I best keep my mouth shut and be thankful. I love the snow pics!

Paula said...

Beautiful pictures, Don- but it makes my feet cold just looking at them! LOL

I hear you, we are supposed to get a lot of snow in bot February and March.

ps love the pics.

choke - I hate to tell you this - after about the 20th of January, it was insanely beautiful in Colorado. It hit 65 over the weekend and may hit 70 on Thursday!

Don said...

mandie: we all have to endure!

I am getting tired of indoor recess! The kids are getting cabin fever and my room is a mess!

Don said...

paula: I'm sure the chickens are thinking the same thing. It's nice that their feet have very little nerve endings and blood flow.

Don said...

bob: snow! let it snow!

Our forecast is for 7 straight days of temperatures in the 30's and 40's F Yea!

Don said...

Loring: I don't think my thermometer would work with that kind of warmth. It might boil over. Make sure you get out with some short sleeves and shorts!

As someone who used to travel to Michigan a lot for work, I'm surprised there were as many as 15 hours above 32!

In my part of SE Australia ,we have now had 12 days in a row over 40C including today which is 46C ,or 115F .My garden is just about finished wit onlt the established fruit trees hanging in there .Toamatoes have withered ,aubergine are on their last gasp ,--pumpkins ,cucumbers ,melons etc are all hanging limp ,may survive if we get a cool change and I get some water on them .But nearly out of water too ! Not a good season .
