Doors and Las Tres Amigas

Doors

The coop is almost totally enclosed! The white door is a recycled kitchen door from some old farmhouse. I like the idea of having a door with a window for more light. The large door to the left of the white door used to hang on this barn and I converted it to a wall. My son Peter helped me install these. If you click on his name, you will see his Band with their newly released CD! (He's the one sitting down with the sunglasses). We had a lot of fun chasing the barn cat around and sitting watching the chicks run around. It was so nice outside, we hardly got anything done. There will be an outside wall installed so this view is temporary.

Ameraucanas

I realized that I didn't have any of these chicks in my collection and I definitely needed the green and/or blue eggs they lay. So I drove over to Mason's farm store and bought these tres amigas this morning.

Ruth had fun taking this picture as las tres amigas were feeling a little shy.

Hey Don , I love the way your using these old doors, looks very cool, love the cute chicks, especially the behind shot, lol.

Peter's group is actually quite good, I heard a little of the Crowded House influenece.

Hi Bob: It's nice to have a grungy old barn, where just about anything I do is an improvement! I too think old doors are cool.

Thanks for giving Peter's band a listen!

Look at their cute fluffy bums!

Freefalling: Isn't that funny? Ruth has a real eye for a shot.

Guess what? Chicken butt.

(Somebody had to say it!)

Cute chicks. Are you SURE they're the tres amigas? What if they're amigos??? LOL

Tell Peter I really liked their song "Murder in a Small Town". That's the kind of music that's easy to listen to. Good stuff!

Your chicken coop is coming along nicely! I love the old doors. Way to freecycle.

nathan and nancy: I was trying to think of something I heard, and no doubt said as a kid, and I do believe that is it!

amy: if they are the three amigos, it will be adios amigos! Freecycle is a great thing.

If you are reading this and don't know what freecycle is, google it and you will find one in your area. It's a community give and receive board, and everything is free!

Sandy: They better not be amigos! The chicks are already getting too big for my brooder, so I need to get the coop totally enclosed!

i seriously laughed out loud at the last photo! another magazine cover for the mammas! i can't wait to eat some green eggs and ham.

the coop is really coming together!! i'm excited to see in person in may!

i've plugged Peter's cd so many times, on my blog and i even sent an email to all my friends! i'm so proud sister, can't stop listening to it.

lesleyanne: Hey daughter! Isn't that a funny picture? I love Nathan's comment. People need to go to your etsy shoppe and see your cool hand-made stuff.

One of the chickens has a deep greenish tinge to her wing feathers. What can you make with feathers. (after the moult off, of course!)

I'm proud of you, actually! Ameraucanas are one of the most fun breeds, one because they lay green/blue eggs, and two, they com in all colors!! We have white, brown, and caramel colored in our batch! They are so cute. Adorable colors, Don!

The door looks great; I'm getting addicted to these chick pictures: it's pure, sweet joy to look at these little guys!

Don said...

chickengirl: I thought I was going to get some from Mcmurrary, and I hope the ones I think are Campines aren't Ameraucanas! I hope the three all look different!

laura: Thank you! I think I am obsessing a little too much on the chicks. I wonder how well chicks do with watercolors? You might have to start raising some...?

OOh someone's been busy with the barn!

Looking good Don...

...you'll LOVE my next project...

..I'll post some pics soon for you to look at - nothing quite as grand as your barn though - puts my little shed to shame!

(Stiggy runs off to start planning a second story on his shed!)

Don said...

Stiggy: A second story? Is this for storage, chickens, or a playhouse for the kids?

I am very interested to see your plans!

Stiggy said...

No ...

..unfortunately i was kidding (wishful thinking!) - but I AM going to build another smaller shed behind the one i have already, for my ride on mower and a couple of my motorbikes...

..by the way - Meridian are very good - they remind me of Coldplay actually - plus the other bands mentioned...

...i wish i still had time and energy to play the drums, but family and other things come first, maybe when we've had the building work and groundworks sorted i can relax and have a go again.

:D

Don said...

Stiggy: Make the new shed big enough to accommodate your drum set, so you can bang away!

We didn't order any Ameraucanas for us in our bunch from McMurray, because we already had 6 more comming through 4-H. I hope they are Campines, and not Ameraucanas! You would have wasted your time buying the three chicks...Well, you can't really waste time with chickens!! Believe me, they'll probably look different! It's just the 'Ameraucana Way'.

Paula said...

I love the "behind shot"! The door looks really neat!

Don said...

chickengirl: I agree that if the ones I think are Campines are Ameraucanas that is still AOK with me! Maybe one of them will have pink eggs.

Paula: We laughed when Ruth was taking that shot. It looks like they were naughty and are in a corner. Thanks for your comment!

I'm impressed with the chick-picture taking abilities. Whenever I tried, they always moved at the wrong moment, or blinked. (ha!)

I was overly excited when we got our first blue/green eggs!

Thanks for visiting my site... I'm always looking for new farm sites to visit!!

Oh there you go with your old doors... it looks a lot like the old door we picked from a renovation job that we used as the entrance to our garage... I like that it has history... Hard to throw something like that away... it has a story to tell.

I have another that I was thinking of putting on the chicken coop-to-be if we go through with the plan... the sun can enter and warm the south facing window in the winter.
Hard to stop once you start with beasties...

Love the little chick mug shots... now you'll recognize them if they run away!

Don said...

Jen: Thanks for stopping by! I agree with you on the picture taking. When I placed them on the "stage" I think they all got a little stage fright and just sttod there for a few moments. Ruth is good at taking pics and she made the most of it.

Gwen: I am waiting for your coop construction, because I know it will have cool little touches and ideas which I will definitely steal!

I have several little buildings in the woods that have fallen into various stages of decay. I want to reclaim as much as I can from them.

I like the idea of the mug shots, I'll have to come up with a little number plate for them to hold!

Ruth said...

You know these three were docile, like you said, maybe they were car sick! Poor things. And they looked like they were about to go to sleep, oh so sweet. I think it's funny how their little legs splay out, and they look like they can't keep their footing on that posterboard.

Did I tell you I like your chicks? Did I need to?

Don said...

Ruth: We don't need to even talk and we communicate. Sometimes we can sit for hours and hours and not talk. (Best in Show)

I keep thinking they're in training for Disney's "Three Caballeros"

Don said...

Loring: I loved that cartoon. Was it just one, or was it a series?

Loring Wirbel said...

It was originally a full-length movie, one that is usually forgotten in the Disney pantheon, probably because it came out during WW2. But Disney chopped it into little segments to show on the Wonderful World of Color/Disney. If you watch the whole uncut movie, it's very trippy and surreal.

Don said...

Loring: Trippy and surreal? Hmmm, sounds like my experience in chicken farming. i'm going to look that full cartoon up and watch it. Thanks for the info

Ruth said...

Hey Don, now you have to tell about Gwen's comment coming true . . . the recognizing them from behind, running away part.

laura said...

Followed the link to Meridian's CD--sounds really good. I wonder the Feelies were also influence; there's a sweet, fast lyricism in there that reminds me of them. Hope it does well!!

Don said...

laura: Thanks for listening! I'll ask Peter about the Feelies.

Those tres amigas photos are to die for, both coming and going. Tell Ruth I said so! :)

Very Cute!!! I have an aracauna but she is not near as cute as these little ones.

Don said...

Ginnie: I sorry I didn't respond to this before, but I did pass your words on to Ruth.

Don said...

carole: Aracaunas can look so different! Our three amigas now look very different. One is a light taupe and on is very dark chocolate brown and the third one is somewhere in between. We love em and really love the colorful eggs we'll get soon!
