The Path

Which way shall we go? The path wanders around through our five acres and gives us a view of several different ecosystems.

If we go straight, we go into the woods. It is lovely, dark and deep.

If we go to the right, we walk through the field.

All paths lead to the bench. A nice place to watch bluebirds feed their babies, or catch praying mantises snatching unwary insects amid the goldenrod and queen anne's lace.

Buck Rub
This is a 3' high rub on a sapling where white-tailed bucks have rubbed the velvet off their antlers and also serve notice to other bucks in the neighborhood. The bucks also make "scrapes" which are bare spots where they and does deposit scents to let each other know of intimate intentions.
The rut is in full swing in Michigan. Does will give birth to twins (usually) in the spring.

Egg Side Note
I like the variety of eggs I get from my flock. Today, I made a little breakfast of poached eggs on toast.
The wood stove acting like a stove.

I like this. A lot. C'mon over and I'll make one for you.

psssst, I don't like eggs...except when my Mom makes poached eggs on toast when I'm sick. But, I also like pickled eggs. I love your property, with the different areas and where all paths lead to the bench.

One thing we don't see enough of in Colorado is trails with an undergrowth of green. Everything is red and sandstone and granite. But then in fall, there are no red sumac or oak leaves. I have to visit the Midwest again, or look at your (and Ruth's) pictures to remember the color differences.

Thanks for the walk along the path, I enjoyed the scenery. Some day my dream of owning a wood stove that I can cook on will come true. Those eggs look wonderful. I have yet to try making poached eggs.

We've been cooking on our wood stove too! We did eggs recently (perfect!). Tonight, I cooked baked beans and cornbread. I have discovered that you can "bake" most anything inside a pan. Yum!

I might try brownies next.

I love when you cook me breakfast on weekends, and now that you're doing it on the woodstove, I downright feel like Ma Ingalls on the prairie, and that's nice Pa.

I could go for one of those poached eggs right now!

Your poached eggs look so much prettier than mine ever do! Don't you love having different paths to take? It makes like so much more interesting.

Your eggs look wonderful. I am not usually an egg lover, but have recently started buying free range, organic eggs from a local farm and have been totally converted. I've done a taste test and these ones win hands down. I think of your chickens whenever I make my scrambled wggs now and imagine their eggs to be as good (or even better).

denise: yea for mom making you poached eggs when you're sick. I have an Italian mom at my school who makes eggs for her kids when they are sick. Is your mom Italian?

I don't go to the bench enough.

loring: Colorado is one big mountain and talus slope. Be sure to let us know when you're in the area! I hear there is some guiness in the garage.

Don said...

amy: I hope you get a wood stove soon. I actually got a free one on freecycle. It's sitting in my garage waiting for me to put it in Ruth's studio.

Poached eggs on english muffins,...now that's livin'

hot belly mama: hey you inspired me to cook more on our stove. this morning i made oatmeal in a skillet (i overcooked it, but i don't care!) and right now i have four baked potatoes "baking" in the cast iron skillet on top of the wood stove.

Thank you!!

ruth: I thought was gonna be mama walton, but mama ingall is much hotter!

peter: one more month and then you'll be back up here in the frozen tundra. But hopefully we'll have lots of eggs!

susan: poached eggs can be tricky, maybe i was lucky because the eggs were laid less than 24 hours earlier?

paths/roads are good:

...I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

violetsky: it's hard to beat fresh and wholesome!! I am thinking about other ways to produce fresh and wholesome thigs around here. Maybe fresh, free-range pork is next?

Oh yeah!! (sounding like the Kool-Aid dude) Poached eggs are the best. With Sourdough toast- oh Lordy.
I loved the walk in the woods, Don- I went for a similar walk a few days ago with my camera and saw lots of birds I usually don't see close to the house. It was wonderful!

My favorite Robert Frost poem, Don. I thought of it immediately when I read your post.

meili lo: Thanks for visiting all the way from China! One of my Buff Cochin hens is named Kai Lan. (for a favorite TV show of one of my students) Apparently the Cochin chickens originated somewhere in China or maybe India. I guess that is another thing to argue about!!

I've been looking at acreage (even though we won't be looking to buy for a couple more years) and every time I see pictures like yours, I'm reminded of being younger and wanting places to 'explore'. I hope that when we DO finally buy, I'll have plenty of places to explore.

And no matter how often I see egg pictures, seeing one always makes me want a nice egg sandwich!

Don said...

jennifer: I love egg sandwiches! What is the perfect egg sandwich for you?

This is what we do: break two eggs into a hot skillet containing butter, as the eggs fry, take a fork and carefully break the yolks so the yolks stays inside the egg whites. After the eggs have begun to solidify, carefully flip them over to cook the other side. Be sure to leave the yolk just barely oozy.

Meanwhile, prepare the bread by putting ketchup on both slices.

Put one of the eggs onto one of the bread slices, place a layer of your favorite cheese on the egg and then place the other egg onto the cheese. Lastly place the other slice of ketchupped bread onto the pile and sit down and savor every bite! I want to go make one now!

My son is away until December and can't wait to get home to make a pile of these delicacies!

We have to put in about twelve feet of new stove-pipe before we can enjoy our old stove again.
Your area outside is so awesome Don. Thanks for sharing it.

Carl H. Sr. said...

P.S. Don do you have a Dutch oven for your stove?
It is a cast iron pot large enough to cook stew and such in.
I guess you have heard of them being used by heating them up with the food inside. Then before your fire cools down you move the 'oven' into a box lined with straw or some other insulating material, close it all up and let it continue to cook for 'free'!

Don said...

carl: I have a stove I want to put into ruth's studio. I don't think it's hard, but I just have to get around to it!

I have been looking for a dutch oven at sales. I may have to break down and buy a new one. I wish I had my grandma's, I wonder what happened to that one?
