A Hen in Wolf's Clothing

Wolf Bears Fruit!

I introduced Wolf the pullet to you all yesterday and today I want to introduce you to Wolf the Hen! She layed an egg sometime today. Yea Wolf!

This is what I saw when I checked the nesting boxes this evening.

Later, Ruth put the egg into one of her Grandmother's Buttercup eggcups. Softboiled?

An hour later, I went out to lock the henhouse and turn off the lights and just couldn't resist another look into Wolf's nest. Egg number 2!! This one, however, didn't have a shell. This apparently is common for early eggs. Tomorrow I'll make sure the crushed oyster shell is readily available.
Amy, at Twelve Acres, has chickens the same age as mine. She got an egg yesterday! Way to go Amy!! (actually Amy's hen) ;)

Yeah Don, you have eggs. Now you will obsessively be checking their nesting boxes. We are up to a couple dozen a day. We use lots, give some to family and friends and I sell the remaining for $2/doz. The go like hot cakes!

Oh Don that first egg is so speckled and pretty! Just wonderful! And will you eat it or safe it for posterity? I felt so completely satisfied eating my first egg from MY chooks! You just can't beat that for fulfillment. Congratulations to Wolf (huh?) and may she lay many more wolf eggs!

So does that mean you and Amy got your first egg on the same day?!!
Do you think Wolf called the girls at Amy's henhouse and coordinated this? *LOL at the visual*

Look how many times Easter will happen at your house. Ahhh beautiful egg photos.

It must be SO fun the first few times you see those eggs... or every time.
Well Wolf is a doll by the way...

Country Girl: I can already feel the obsession! How many hens do you have? I have 27 and expect about 20 eggs per day once they get cranking. I am going to do the same thing as you. Give them to family and friends and sell the rest for $2/doz. Great minds...

Amy: That egg is really pretty! I was hoping it would be way darker as a maran layed it. Oh well, maybe they darken as they go. I have heard that the coloring pretty much stays the same tho! Congratulations on your layer!

Paula: Amy's layed an egg the day before mine did. I think she just went to the farmers market and bought it and is pretending to win the omelet contest!

sandy: I have a good variety of layers so I am expecting a multi-color basket of eggs! You know Ruth will love to snap pics of that!!

I did no such thing Don! I wish I knew which one did it though. No eggs since then and I am checking every 5 minutes! LOL I don't know which is harder: waiting for a baby to come or waiting for an egg to come!

Amy: I know ou didn't buy yours at the farmers market, but I liked writing it!!

I didn't get any eggs today either! Maybe one of the hens ran out to the farmers market??

Congratulations on your 'first-born' hope many may come and they make a fine omelette ( hope this is English)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omelette

CONGRATULATIONS DON!

So glad to hear that it was Amy's hen and not Amy who laid their egg. :) Congrats to Amy too!

YAY!! I'm still not sure about ours.... they could be laying in some undiscovered place, waiting to be discovered. ;-)

Congratulations on the first egg, didn't know about eggs without a shell, very interesting.

YAAAAY. Not long after Farm Day...the same month! Congratulations. I would be like a little kid in your shoes, Don. :)

Yay, Don! That egg is sooo pretty! Especially sitting in the egg cup. What a beautiful picture! You should submit that to Backyard Poultry. Still no oggs for me! My pullets are being stubborn. Wish me luck!

My current batch of pullets are still that. I'm eager for them to get going since I bartered a gallon of honey for 10 dozen eggs (don't count your chickens before they're hatched, I guess).

Your "chocolate egg" looks pretty dark. I think that the darkness of the egg depends on breeding more than anything so I don't think you'll get anything darker than that. I've been wrong before though.
